Waunakee Dominates Reedsburg

FOOTBALL: Waunakee dominates Reedsburg, 56-0

The machine that is the Waunakee High School football team flexed its muscles against Reedsburg Area High School Friday night.

How big are those muscles? How about big enough to score 56 points in one quarter?

Undefeated Waunakee, the defending WIAA Division 2 state champion, scored all its points in the first quarter - eight touchdowns - in a 56-0 victory over the Beavers in a Badger North Conference game at Millennium Field.

"It was just a flurry of things, one after another. It's hard to explain. It's painful to see something like that," Reedsburg coach Brian Pottinger said in a post-game interview on WRDB Radio.

Reedsburg fell to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Badger North.

Leo Musso ran for four touchdowns, scoring from six, eight, 53 and 57 yards, to lead Waunakee (5-0, 3-0 Badger North).

Waunakee also scored on a 17-yard run by Hunter Darger, a touchdown pass, a punt return, a fumble return and an interception return.

Reedsburg held Waunakee -- which played a reserve-laden lineup -- scoreless the rest of the way. But by the first 10 minutes of the game, more than enough damage had been done.

"I didn't think we were ever going to get out of the first quarter," Pottinger said. "It just snowballed, one thing after another. Both sides of the ball, they just stuck it to us."

It won't get much easier next week as the Beavers head into a 7 p.m. Friday game at another conference power, DeForest.

"We were (outmanned)," Pottinger said.

"You look across the line, man for man, they've got a lot of athletes that are just a little bit better than us, stronger and faster.

"You look at the scheme and the X's and O's, and it wasn't that. It wasn't scheme, it was personnel. They were just that much better," Pottinger said.

"We're not changing what we're doing. We're just going to get better at what we do and go out next week."
