There will be no playoff run this year.

In a scene eerily reminiscent of the 2008 state championship game, Matt Lennon took a pitch, rolled out to his right and was stopped short of the goal line on a two point conversion attempt that would have given the Beavers a one-point overtime victory over Mount Horeb Friday night.

Instead, the Beavers will now play for bragging rights against Baraboo today (Wednesday) in the battle for the Old River Jug after the loss to the Vikings dropped the Beavers to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Trailing, 14-0, early in the first quarter, Reedsburg stormed back to send the game into overtime, only to lose on the failed conversion attempt after Chad Mazur had hit Clint Newell with a 23-yard touchdown pass to get the Beavers within 35-34.

"Obviously it didn't end the way we wanted it to," said coach Brian Pottinger. "But we had a chance to win, and that's what the message was all week: Just put us in a position where we have a chance to win."

It didn't look like the Beavers would have much of a chance in the early going against the high-powered Mount Horeb offense and quarterback Danny Elver.

On Mount Horeb's second play from scrimmage after the opening kickoff, Elver hit Sam Nechkash with a 22-yard completion to the 42, and two plays later Elver connected with Matt Fargo for a 55 -yard touchdown 77 seconds into the game.

The Beavers took over at the 50-yard line after a good kick return by Chad Mazur, but Reedsburg managed just 6 yards on three plays and were forced to punt.

Starting at the 20, the Vikings picked up a first down to the 33 and on the next play Elver hit Luke Webber with a 38-yard completion to the Reedsburg 30. On the next play Austin Elliott gained 11 yards to the 19, and Elver hit Nechkash with a 19 yard touchdown pass on the next play to put the Vikings up 14-0 with 6:08 left in the first quarter.

Reedsburg answered on its next drive after Jordan Gauf recovered a fumble on a punt that hit an MH player at the Reedsburg 48. Mazur gained 14 yards on second and nine, and sophomore Austin Westerwelle gained another nine yards to the 23. Facing a fourth and two at the 15, Mazur got the Viking defense to jump offside with a hard count to set up a first and goal at the 10. Matt Lennon then scored from nine yards out with 1:33 left in the quarter to close the gap to 14-7. Reedsburg got a big defensive play to start the second quarter from Matt Archambo. After a pass interference call on the Beavers gave Mount Horeb a first and 10 at the 27, the Vikings moved to the Beaver 10-yard-line, but on third down Archambo intercepted an Elver pass in the end zone and returned it to the 15, but the Beavers were forced to punt on a three-and-out on their next possession. Mount Horeb then made the first of two questionable play calls in the game when they tried a fake punt on fourth and two from their own 40. The Reedsburg defense sniffed out the play and MH punter Matt Fargo was tackled at the Vikings 40 with 1:15 left in the first half.

With 56 seconds left Mazur rumbled to the 27, then picked up 10 yards to the 17 and six more to the 11 yard-line. With 27 seconds left Lennon rolled to the four yard line and Mazur picked up two more yards before the Beavers called a time out with 10 seconds to go. On second and goal Lennon dove and reached across the line for the tying score with nine seconds left in the half. "We had some confidence on both sides of the ball going into the second half but the key was that we had to sustain that momentum," said Pottinger, who's team had scored 14 unanswered points and would also get the ball to start the second half.

Reedsburg opened the second half with a good drive from their own 38. Austin Westerwelle picked up 11 yards on first down and three plays later Mazur added a 12 yard run to the Mount Horeb 37. Matt Lennon added a 14-yard run to the 16 but the drive stalled when Michael Hayes attempted a 30 yard field goal that was blocked.

The Reedsburg defense then answered and forced the Vikings to punt on their next possession. The Beavers got a great return from Lennon on the punt and started at the Mount Horeb 24-yard line. Five plays later Mazur scored from inside the one yard line to put Reedsburg ahead for the first time, but again the kicking game faltered when the extra point attempt was blocked keeping the score at 20-14 Reedsburg with 2:59 left in the third quarter. Pottinger said "The kicking game was extremely inconsistent all year. Sometimes it was due to poor blocking and other times it was due to the time being off or other factors. We just could never put it all together and that's what championship caliber teams do."

The Vikings regained the lead on their next drive when they marched 78 yards in 91 seconds. Danny Elver gained 13 yards on second and 10, and Elver recovered his own fumble on the next play to force a second and 12. After an incomplete pass, Elver hit Sam Nechkash, this time for a 63-yard completion to the Reedsburg nine yard line. On the next play Elver scored to put Mount Horeb back in front at 21-20 with 1:26 to go in the third quarter. "We've faced some pretty good QB's this year and Elver is certainly among that group because he does such a great job with their system," said Pottinger, "I don't know if I've ever seen a primarily running conference with the number of talented QB's and receivers that we have this year."

Reedsburg was forced to punt on their first possession of the fourth quarter, and again Mount Horeb scored. Starting at their own 46 the Vikings quickly moved to the Reedsburg 15 where Elver tossed a jump-ball pass to the left side of the end zone where 6-foot-two Luke Webber went up and over 5-5 Matt Archambo and made the catch for a 26 yard touchdown on second and 21 from the Reedsburg 26. Trailing 28-20, the Beavers got a break when Mount Horeb's Tyson Fredrick fumbled a Reedsburg punt and Keith Craker recovered the loose ball at the Mount Horeb 32-yard line. The Beavers then tied the game with a 15 yard touchdown run by Lennon on fourth and six and Chad Mazur added the two point conversion to tie the game at 28 all with 3:50 to play. The Beavers then got another golden opportunity on the Vikings next possession. Starting at their 30 the Vikings were forced to punt on fourth and seven at their own 46. For the second time in the game Mount Horeb punter matt Fargo tried to pick up the first down on the play, but was stopped short by the reedsburg defense and the Beavers took over at the Viking 47-yard line. Matt Lennon picked up a first down to the 35 and on his next carry the Beaver senior rumbled 17 yards to the 18. On the play the Vikings were also called for a facemask, giving the Beavers a first and goal at the nine-yard line with 46 seconds to play. Clint Newell picked up five yards but on third down the Beavers were called for illegal procedure that pushed them all the way back to the 21 yard line with three seconds left in the game. After a time out Michael Hayes came on to attempt a 32 yard field goal, but the kick sailed wide left as time expired with the score still 28-28.

In overtime Mount Horeb won the toss and scored in just four plays on an eight yard run by Austin Elliott. Needing to score and get an extra point to keep their hopes alive, Reedsburg took over at the 25 yard line. On third and eight Mazur lofted a pass to the left front corner of the end zone where Clint Newell made a great catch as he was falling backwards, and Newell rolled into the end zone for the touchdown. Needing one point to tie and two to win, the Beavers decided to go for the two-point conversion, but Lennon was stopped short on a nice tackle by Tyson Fredrick just short of the goal line, giving the Vikings the 35-34 win and ending the Beavers hopes of a trip to the playoffs.

"I told them after the game it's OK to be sad and disappointed because it shows that you care," said Pottinger. "But like any other setback you can't dwell on it. We have to pick ourselves up and get back in the saddle because we still have one more game to play together as a team."

Matt Lennon led Reedsburg with 120 yards on 26 carries and Danny Elver led the Vikings with 93 yards on 23 carries. Danny Elver completed 9 of 15 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns with Sam Nechkash catching three passes for an even 100 yards.

The Beavers will try and keep the Old River Jug Wednesday when they take on the 1-7 Thunderbirds at Millennium Field at 7 p.m. Reedsburg won last year's contest 35-0 at Baraboo but trails 60-56 in the all-time series that dates back to 1900.
