BEAVER DAM — Considering the way it decisively stopped defending WIAA Division 3 state champion and unbeaten Wisconsin Lutheran, only one question remains for the Reedsburg prep football team:

Can it be stopped?

Quarterback Tyler Mazur and backs Justin Huinker and Matt Lennon helped the Beavers roll up 363 rushing yards en route to a 40-20 victory in a state semifinal Saturday afternoon.

"I knew we had a chance to be good at the beginning of the year," Reedsburg coach Brian Pottinger said, "but there are so many things that come into play during the season, it's really hard to describe the feeling now."

Next up: Waupaca, in the state championship game at 10 a.m. Friday at Camp Randall Stadium. The Comets advanced by routing Kewaskum 42-0.

It'll be hard to top Saturday's win for the Beavers (10-3).

Lennon rushed for 164 yards on 15 carries, while Mazur had 161 on 21, including three touchdowns. Huinker ran for 28 yards and had two TDs, including one on a reception.

Their defense contained a Vikings offense that featured two 1,000-yard rushers to just 258 yards. In the second half alone, they held Wisconsin Lutheran to just eight plays and forced four turnovers.

"I knew if we got to their quarterback that we would be in good shape," Reedsburg defensive coordinator Matt Delkamp said.

The defense came up with the first big play on Lutheran's opening drive. Running back Frank Spath fumbled on the first play and the Beavers recovered at the 17. Six plays later, Huinker scored from the 1.

"That turnover gave us a whole lot of confidence," Pottinger said. "We got up on them early, our defense is playing well and it's like, 'Wow, we can play with these guys.' "

After forcing a punt and starting at the Lutheran 39, Lennon picked up 11 yards on first down and Mazur scored on the next play for a 14-0 lead with 7 minutes, 51 seconds left in the first quarter.

It didn't take the Vikings long to answer as John Klein hit a wide-open Corey Henne with a 48-yard touchdown pass. But the quick-strike Reedsburg offense answered right back when Lennon scampered in from 38 yards out to give the Beavers a 21-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Lutheran had a chance to get closer on their next drive, but Bryan Webb fumbled on first down after the drive had reached the Reedsburg 19. Cody Polacek recovered the fumble for the Beavers, who took over at their own 20.

Mazur raced 35 yards to the Viking 44 on second and nine, and then scored on a 41-yard burst up the middle that gave the Beavers a 28-7 lead with 3:42 left in the half.

The Vikings answered with a score on their next drive when Klein hit Tim Filter with a 20-yard TD pass with one minute to play, but the PAT failed and Reedsburg took a 28-13 lead at halftime.

Mazur culminated a second-half opening 64-yard drive with a 1-yard TD. Soon after Lutheran fumbled on the first play of the ensuing possession, Huinker's 31-yard TD run made it 40-13.
